Developing the language of emotions in the early years.

14 Mar 2026
SEMH

With an increase in children within mainstream settings experiencing additional support for social, emotional & mental health needs, practitioners within early years are increasingly needing to adapt their curriculum & support to ensure that Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) core skills are secure before accessing other aspects of the curriculum. This session explores the various approaches and strategies which can be shared with children to ensure that they all develop their individual coping toolkits.

Target audience who should attend this seminar: SENCO's / Leaders, Practitioners / Support Staff /Parent & Carers / Local Authority Staff

Learning outcomes:

  1. Appreciate the importance of ‘little & often’. This includes the significance of repetition of key emotion vocabulary in a variety of contexts.
  2. Celebrate the power of adult support in embedding children’s understanding of emotions words. This includes adults recognising how being a responsive play partner helps children build up their emotions words toolkit.
  3. Be reminded of he significance of ‘hooks’. This includes exploring how adults can provide connections or hooks for children to build up their understanding of emotion words, with the intention that they can independently communicate their feelings.
  4. Build up ideas of how to strengthen engagement with families in supporting their children's PSED skills.
