Sensory Integration and its impact on learning

This interactive 45-minute session, co-led by an Occupational Therapist and a Speech and Language Therapist, explores how sensory processing shapes student’s ability to learn, communicate and participate in school life. Through practical activities, case discussions and evidence-based strategies, teachers will gain insight into recognising sensory needs and creating inclusive classroom environments that align with UK SEND policy and support both mainstream and SEN learners.

Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the principles of sensory integration and how sensory processing differences affect children’s learning, behaviour, and communication.
- Recognise the link between sensory needs, inclusion, and current UK SEND policy frameworks.
- Identify practical, low-cost strategies to support sensory regulation in both mainstream and SEN classrooms.
- Apply case-based problem solving to adapt teaching approaches and promote participation for diverse learners.
