How The Brain Works - a Neuroplasticity-Based Method to Support Reading Difficulties.
This session will explore the power of neuroplasticity and how working with the brain can dramatically improve outcomes for struggling readers. We will consider the critical role mental images play in reading and how to tell if a child’s mental images are causing literacy issues. The session will outline a playful process that creates new neural pathways and rapid breakthroughs for students who previously found reading difficult despite targeted interventions.
Target audience who should attend this seminar: SENCO's / Leaders / Practitioners / Support Staff / Parent & Carers
Learning outcomes:
• Delegates will have a deeper understanding of what's happening for pupils who struggle with reading despite interventions. This will inform and enhance the way they interact with and teach these pupils.
• Delegates will understand what mental images are and the critical role they play in reading. They will recognise pupils who may be masking reading issues, especailly around comprehension, due to the way their mental images are processed.
• Delegates will learn how working with mental images, and the brain's neuroplasticity, can rapidly create new neural pathways and have a profound effect on a child’s ability to read. They will leave with an outline process for working in this way as well as strategies to use with individuals, groups or whole classes.
• Delegates will understand how language can deeply affect a child’s learning when teaching reading, especially phonics. They will know what language to avoid and what to use instead.
